More expensive than polyester or hollowfibre inserts, they contain small feathers with a slight natural curl, which act like springs. They produce a firm and supportive cushion, with a medium-firm sink when you lean or sit on them. As such, they are a great option for suite, bolster and scatter cushions on a bed or sofa. Indeed, most high end cushions will be made with 100% feather, rather than feather and down, pads. These cushion inserts are also popular with interior designers looking for a luxury finish at a sensible price. All of our cushion inserts are filled with 100% feather. Feather cushion inserts will need regular plumping and turning to maintain their shape.
Hollow Fibre Inners
Cushion inserts made from hollowfibre or polyester are cheap and lightweight. Synthetic fillings do not trap dust as easily as natural ones, with hollow fibre also being known to inhibit mould growth. Odourless and non-allergenic, this may therefore be a preferable option if you or your family suffer from allergies or asthma. Now to the downsides of this type of cushion insert, Hollowfibre or polyester pads are the lowest quality of pad available on the market and will break down over time, losing their shape, flattening and becoming lumpy. These synthetic fillings are also very harmful to the environment - as they are neither recyclable nor biodegradable. Most of these cushions will end up in landfills, when they reach the end of their useful lives. When it comes to textiles, polyester is also one of the biggest polluters on the planet, requiring a vast amount of energy and water to produce it.
